The Madras High Court on Thursday urged members of the Bar to meet with the State Police and come up with solutions to ensure the safety of lawyers in light of the frequent attacks on lawyers in the recent past..A Bench of Chief Justice KR Shriram and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy asked State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohammed Jinnah to facilitate a meeting between office bearers and senior members of the Bar and the Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu to this end..The Court made the suggestion after Senior Advocate and Vice-Chairperson of the Bar Council of India, S Prabakaran, made an urgent mentioning before the Bench, bringing to its notice the attack on a lawyer in Hosur on November 20.Prabakaran told the Court that the victim lawyer was in a critical condition.While the Bench pointed out that as per news reports, the lawyer had been attacked by a law clerk out of a personal vendetta, Prabakaran said that attacks on lawyers had become commonplace and members of the Bar were “deeply disturbed” by such incidents.The Court then suggested that the Bar members meet with the police and table their concerns.“The DGP will be best person to address this issue, and the State Public Prosecutor could facilitate a meeting between him and the Bar leaders,” the High Court said..On Wednesday, a lawyer named Kannan was assaulted with a sickle by one Anand, who worked as a court clerk. After onlookers intervened, Anand was arrested.Kannan, who sustained injuries to his head, was rushed to the hospital, where he is reportedly in a critical condition.Reports suggest that Anand was allegedly enraged by a suspected affair between Kannan and Anand's wife.
