Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel have approached the Supreme Court seeking transfer of four criminal cases pending against them in various Mumbai courts to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

This includes the criminal defamation complaint filed against Ranaut by noted Bollywood lyricist, Javed Akhtar.

Ranaut and Chandel have claimed that all cases against them are frivolous and filed with malicious intent to harass them and malign their public image.

The petition states that while they have utmost faith and respect for courts in the country, they apprehend threat to their life and property if the trial in the cases continue in Mumbai.

They also alleged harassment at the instance of Maharashtra government led by Shiv Sena.

"It is pertinent to mention that the Maharashtra government led by Shiv Sena has been harassing the petitioners," the plea says.

In this context the petition has referred to the statement by Shiv Sena leader and Member of Parliament, Sanjay Raut who allegedly called Ranaut 'Haramkhor Ladki'.

The petitioners have also adverted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation demolishing a part of Ranaut's Pali Hill bungalow.

The petition by Ranaut has been filed through Advocate on Record, Neeraj Shekhar.

The four specific FIRs/ complaints with respect to which transfer have been sought to Shimla are as follows:

1. Criminal defamation (Sections 499 and 500 of IPC) complaint filed by Javed Akhtar against Ranaut for the statements made by her about Akhtar on an interview to Republic TV's Arnab Goswami. This case is pending before the Metropolitan Magistrate, Mumbai

2. Case filed by a lawyer, Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh taking exceptions to Chandel’s tweet in which she tweeted expressing her anguish at the attack on doctors who went for Corona check up of the family of a man who had passed away due to Covid.

The tweet said:

“A Jamati died of Corona when police and doctors went to check their families, they were attacked and killed, secular media, make these mullas+secular media stand in line and shoot them dead….f***k the history they may call us nazis who cares life is more important than fake image.”

Twitter had later suspended Chandel’s account. Ranaut spoke out against suspension of Chandel’s Twitter account.

Subsequently Deshmukh filed complaint at Amboli Police Station Mumbai against both of them for promoting enmity between religious groups, insuting religious sentiments and public mischief.

3. The third is a complaint case filed against the two sisters on the same subject matter as above before the 66th Metropolitan Magistrate, Andheri, Mumbai.

4. The fourth is a FIR lodged by one Munawar Ali against Ranaut and Chandel at the Bandra Police station for their Tweets against the Maharashtra government. The FIR has bee lodged for offences of hurting religious sentiments, promoting enmity between religious groups and sedition.
