Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel have moved the Bombay High Court to quash the FIR filed by the Mumbai Police against them after a Metropolitan Magistrate at Bandra ordered the police to take cognizance of a complaint by one Munnawarali Sayyed filed over allegedly hateful tweets.
The plea filed by Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee has sought in an interim stay on the summons issued by the Mumbai Police and prayed that no coercive action must be taken against the sisters.
After the order of the Magistrate at Bandra, the police immediately registered an FIR against the sisters alleging offences punishable under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different religious groups), 295A (maliciously outraging religious feelings), 124A (sedition) read with 34 (conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code.
The Police had issued summons earlier on two occasions, when the sisters replied that since they were in Himachal Pradesh for a family member's wedding, they could not appear before the police.
Subsequently, the Mumbai Police issued a third summons to Ranaut and Chandel last week, which has now been challenged.
