The Central government on Wednesday notified that Madras High Court judge Justice M Duraiswamy will take over as the acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court. The appointment will be effective from Wednesday. .The appointment came after Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee was transferred to Meghalaya High Court..Justice Duraiwswamy will, however, have a short gap to fill as acting Chief Justice since Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari of Allahabad High Court who has been transferred to Madras High Court, will become the senior most judge of the Madras High Court once he assumes charge. He will then take over from Justice Duraiswamy as acting Chief Justice.Justice Bhandari became a judge in 2007 when he was appointed as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court on July 5 that year. He was then transferred to the Allahabad High Court and took oath as a judge on March 15, 2019. He is currently the second senior-most judge at Allahabad High Court..Meanwhile, Justice Banerjee bid farewell to the High Court on Wednesday and left for Meghalaya after penning an emotional letter to the Bar, Bench and staff at the Madras High Court. Justice Banerjee's transfer has not been taken to kindly by the Bar which has alleged that he is being sent to a High Court of lesser prominence because of his rulings against various ruling dispensations.On Monday, advocates of the Madras High Court had staged a silent protest outside the Court seeking a review of the decision by the Supreme Court Collegium.Prior to that, at least 237 lawyers practicing before the Madras High Court wrote a letter to the five Supreme Court judges who make up the Collegium, registering their protest against its recommendation to transfer Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee to the Meghalaya High Court..[Read Notification]
