The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Friday left no room for doubt, stating that he will not permit forum shopping. .The remark was made when a lawyer mentioned a case before a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha and KV Viswanathan.The same case was listed yesterday before Justice KM Joseph and was slated to be listed today and since Justice Joseph was to demit office, the lawyer mentioned the case before CJI led bench. "You were before Justice Joseph yesterday and today you are here. You can go to some other judge then. You can just pick and choose your judge. I will not permit forum shopping as the CJI", said CJI Chandrachud. He added,"A message to the bar you have a tough CJI and such practices will not be allowed.".Forum shopping has provoked criticism from both the Supreme Court as well as several High Courts in the past. The practice has also invited heavy costs for parties. Last year, the Jodhpur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court upheld an order passed by a single-judge imposing costs of ₹10 lakh on a party for forum shopping.
