The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday took suo motu cognizance and halted the demolition drive conducted in the Nuh district of Haryana following communal clashes that erupted in the city recently. [Court on its own motion vs State of Haryana].A Bench headed by Justice GS Sandhawalia took suo motu cognisance of the matter.As per HT, violence broke out in Nuh district on July 31 evening after a mob attacked a VHP procession following rumours that cow vigilante Monu Manesar would be participating in the march.According to NDTV, at least five people were killed in the ensuing clashes and at least 70 were injured, including policemen. The police have registered about 40 cases and arrested over 80 people in connection with the communal violence, it was further reported..Subsequently, a demolition drive was conducted by the administration in the district with over 700 structures being demolished over the course of four days, as per a report by HT.Officials have been quoted as saying that the demolished structures were residences, shops, and unauthorized constructions in Nuh, all of which were erected on government property and utilized by individuals suspected to have engaged in the communal clashes.The Superintendent of Police also reportedly informed that a total of 56 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in relation to the communal violence, resulting in the arrest of 147 individuals thus far.
