Amid work suspension, Allahabad High Court Bar asks lawyers to not address judges as 'My Lord' or 'Your Lordship'

The Allahabad High Court Bar Association on Thursday decide to continue with its decision to abstain from work in protest against the High Court administration's alleged failure to address certain issues being faced by the lawyers, particularly the conduct of certain judges towards the Bar..The lawyers today abstained from work in response to a resolution passed by the Bar Association on July 9 for work suspension.Upping the ante, the Bar Association in a strongly-worded resolution after a meeting of its Executive Committee said it wants to save the judiciary "from insider attack being done by some of Hon’ble judges treating themselves as God"."It is resolved that High Court is not a temple of justice rather is a court of justice and the judges are also the public servants for which they are being paid from the public exchequer and are appointed to serve the public at large. We refuse to recognise them as God...," the resolution said..It further called upon the lawyers of all bar associations to not address the judges as 'My Lord' or 'Your Lordship'The lawyers may rather use any respective pronoun like “Sir, Your Honour or Mannyiy”, it said in the resolution.In this regard, the Bar Association relied upon a recent statement of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud in which he had expressed his reservations about people calling the courts "temples of justice" and said there was a "grave danger" in judges perceiving themselves as deities of those temples..The Bar Association also issued a warning to the lawyers who flouted its directive for work suspension, including those who argued the cases through video conference. "The persons who have flouted the decision of the Bar Association and against whom the notices have been sent by the Bar Association to terminate their membership from the Bar Association, will be terminated from their membership if they do not submit their proper explanation of the notice and they will be restrained to take all benefits extended by the High Court Bar Association for their members such as Medical Claim, Death Claim and priority in Chamber Allotment, etc. and they will be blacklisted forever from the membership of the High Court Bar Association and will never be permitted to be the member of the High Court Bar Association," the resolution stated.It said the work suspension will continue on Friday..In its letter of July 10, the Bar Association had expressed concerns that the current relationship between the judges and lawyers was damaging and affecting the administration of justice.The letter raised the following concerns:- Court conduct of Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal;- Behaviour of some other judges towards the lawyers;- Judges do not follow old tradition to revise the list of fresh cases/ unlisted cases..Why Allahabad High Court Bar Association has resolved to abstain from work tomorrow.[Read Resolution]
