[Farmers Protest] Why are you continuing protests, strangulating city after challenging Farm Laws in courts? Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday took objection to the stance of the farmers who are continuing protests against three farm laws despite challenging the validity of the same before courts including Supreme Court (Kisan Mahapanchayat v. Union of India)..A Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar said that once the laws have been challenged in courts, the protesting farmers should repose their faith in the system and courts instead of continuing with the protests."Once you have approached courts challenging the laws, what is the point of continuing the protests. If you have faith in courts, pursue that for urgent hearing instead of protesting," the Bench remarked..The Court was hearing a plea by Kisan Mahapanchayat seeking permission to stage Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The Court during the hearing also took exception to the protesters causing inconvenience to general public. "You have strangulated the city and now you want to come inside the city and protest. This coaxing should stop. You have blocked highways and roads," the Bench said.The Court also said that the protesters are destroying property and were also seen heckling security personnel. "It was all over the media," the Court remarked.Advocate Ajay Choudhary appearing for the petitioner, maintained that it is not the farmers who have blocked the highways but the police personnel. He also said that the petitioner association is not part of the protests. The Court then proceeded to ask the petitioner to file an affidavit to that effect stating that it is not participating in the protests. The Court also asked the petitioner to serve an advance copy of the petition to the Attorney General. The matter will be heard again on Monday, October 4..Various farmers unions and organisations and individuals have assailed the three Farm Laws before the Supreme Court.The three laws, Farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance & Farm Services Act 2020, Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act & Amendment to Essential Commodities Act have been challenged as illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional.The Supreme Court had on January 12, 2021 stayed the implementation of the three laws and also ordered the formation of a four-member committee to hear all the parties and stakeholders and submit a report to the Court about the same.Farmers, particularly from north Indian States of Punjab and Haryana, have, however continued their protests at Delhi borders since the government has remained steadfast on its decision to not repeal the laws..[Read Order].[Read Live Account of Hearing]
