The Central government is examining the feasibility of setting up a Bench of the Allahabad High Court at Agra for the benefit of lawyers and litigants of Western Uttar Pradesh, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said..Rijiju was speaking at a sports event in Uttar Pradesh, ABP news reported.Currently, besides the principal Bench at Allahabad, the High Court has a Bench in State capital, Lucknow.Bar members from western regions of Uttar Pradesh have been demanding establishment of a Bench at Agra citing the geographic expanse of the State and the difficulties faced by lawyers and litigants from Western parts of the State to travel to Allahabad.Senior Advocate and President Allahabad High Court Bar Association Amrendra Nath Singh expressed his displeasure over Law Minister's statement. Speaking to Bar & Bench, he stated that government should first considering filling up the vacancies at Allahabad and Lucknow. "I heard that Union Law Minister said that government will be considering establishment of a new bench at Agra. It will cost them around ₹2,000 crore and they need permission from the Chief Justice," Singh said. Further, he added that for the past 20 years, the vacancies at both the existing benches is yet to be considered by the government.
