The Delhi High Court recently sentenced Veer Singh, son of founder and chairman of the Max Group conglomerate Analjit Singh, to three months of simple imprisonment for contempt of court. [Kinri Dhir v Veer Singh].A division bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna also ordered the local Station House Officer (SHO) to issue arrest warrants against Singh and to get Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against him.“From the submissions of the learned counsel for the respondent (Singh), it is evident that he is not willing to purge the contempt by complying with the orders or to address on the sentence, we hereby sentence him for Simple Imprisonment of three months with fine of ₹2,000/-. The SHO, Tilak Marg is directed to issue warrants of arrest against the respondent and shall also get the Look Out circular issued against the respondent,” the Court ordered..The bench was dealing with a plea filed by Singh’s wife Kinri Dhir (Singh denies marrying her) to initiate contempt of court proceedings against him for flouting the orders of the Court.It was stated that on June 1, 2023, Singh joined the proceedings through video conference and gave an undertaking to the Court that he will continue to pay maintenance to Dhir and that the maintenance for the month of May will be transferred within 24 hours. .Dhir said that the order was not complied with. Singh’s counsel also admitted that the order has not been complied with. However, the counsel added that the contempt petition is not maintainable.When the Court ordered him to be physically present on the next date of hearing, Singh’s counsel stated that his client is not in India and therefore, cannot appear in Court.The Court observed that it was evident that Singh was not willing to purge the contempt by complying with the orders.The bench then sentenced him to three months of simple imprisonment.
