The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to an inmate who tested positive for COVID-19 in jail and lost her eye apparently due to black fungus (Meenu Singh vs State). .Justice Mukta Gupta directed that the person be released on interim bail till July 12, 2021, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 25,000 with one surety bond of the like amount. .The inmate, Meenu Singh (petitioner), was facing criminal proceedings for commission of offences under Sections 420/409/506/120-B/34 IPC. .As per the medical report received from Central Jail, Tihar, the petitioner complained of generalized weakness in April end and was later found positive for COVID-19. .The petitioner was then kept in the isolation ward, from where she was sent to a hospital for difficulty in breathing and decreased oxygen saturation. .The petitioner was subsequently discharged with diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus II, hypertension, moderate COVID19, bilateral pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infection. .It was during her isolation that the petitioner complained of decreased vision in the right eye..Following an MRI of brain and orbit at Safdarjung Hospital, the report suggested "right frontal bone Osteoma & diffuse frontal & parietal predominant cerebral atrophy". .There were, however, no findings suggestive of Mucormycosis or Black Fungus in the MRI, the Court recorded. .Considering that the findings of the MRI report needed specialist treatment, the Court deemed it fit to grant interim bail to the petitioner till the next date of hearing. .[Read Order]
