A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to JNU student Sharjeel Imam in a sedition case registered against him for his allegedly provocative speech against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). .However, Imam will continue to remain in jail as he is also one of the main accused in Delhi riots conspiracy case. The sedition FIR against Imam was registered at New Friends Colony Police Station for his speeches on the allegation that it led to violence in Delhi's Jamia Nagar in 2019.According to the police, his speeches led to violence in the area and he was charged with various offences under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).However, the Court later said that only two of these offences were made out against Imam. These offences were Sections 124A (Sedition) and 153A (Promoting enmity between groups). Imam has now been granted bail in both these offences. .Additional Sessions Judge Anuj Agrawal granted Imam statutory bail after noting the fact that he has already undergone more than half of the period of incarceration mandated for offence under Section 153A and the provision criminalising sedition has been put in abeyance by the Supreme Court. .Bail hearings in the Delhi riots conspiracy case is pending before the Delhi High Court. .Advocates Talib Mustafa, Ahmad Ibrahim and Kartik Venu appeared for Imam.
