The Bombay High Court on Monday permitted a man who was convicted for killing his mother and attempting to eat her body parts, to attend the wedding of his daughter. [State of Maharashtra v. Sunil Rama Kuchkoravi] .The Court permitted the convict to be taken out with a police escort from 9 AM to 6 PM on February 23 -25, so that he may attend the wedding. It was ordered that the convict should be brought back to jail by 6 PM..The convicted man had earlier been awarded the death sentence by a trial court for brutally murdering his mother and extracting her body organs with the intention to cook and eat them..During the hearing, the Bench of Justices AS Gadkari and PD Naik was informed that the man was given capital punishment for killing his mother in an inebriated state, removing her organs, and keeping them on the table. Advocate Yug Mohit Chaudhari submitted further that the motive for his act was unknown. “We don’t know the motive. Even his family is shocked. He was a wonderful man, they all say. Unblemished record. He used to have frequent headaches so used to consume liquor,” Chaudhari said. He proceeded to urge the Court to grant temporary bail for a week so that the convicted man may attend his daughter's wedding..The Court was not inclined to grant temporary bail. However, the Court said that it would permit the accused to attend the wedding with a police escort.Chaudhari, in turn, pointed out that the man belonged to the below poverty line category and would not be able to pay the escort charges. As such, the Court exempted him from having to pay such charges and directed the competent authority of the State to make the necessary payments to the policemen who would escort the convict. “We are allowing him to be taken out of prison for three days only because it is his daughter’s wedding,” the Court said..In July 2021, a sessions judge in Kolhapur sentenced the convicted man, Sunil Rama Kuchkoravi, to be hanged by the neck till he is dead for the offence of murder, subject to confirmation by the High Court. The judge had also remarked that the case fell under the 'rarest of rare' category, as it shook the social conscience of the society. The State government had filed a confirmation plea before the High Court in 2021 itself. The confirmation is yet to be heard. In the meantime, the accused filed for temporary bail to attend his daughter’s wedding..Kolhapur Court awards death sentence to man for murdering his mother, eviscerating her body parts with intention to eat
