Court No 1 of the Supreme Court witnessed an extraordinary exchange today as Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud berated a lawyer for asking for changes in an order.

The order in question had only been noted down by the court master and was yet to be signed by the judges and uploaded.

Just when the Bench of CJI Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was about to rise for the day around noon, a lawyer appearing in an arbitration case mentioned the order dictated earlier in court and requested for some changes.

Visibly irked at the lawyer citing an order of the court which was yet to been signed by the judges, the CJI reprimanded him for asking the court master about the details.

How dare you speak to the court master and see what was dictated?

Turning back to the court master, the CJI said, "aap ne use kuch bola kya?" (did you tell him something?).

After the interaction, the CJI said,

"The court master says to the contrary! Is it now that you will come to my house and show me what I dictated to my officer. The final order is the one which we sign. Do not try these funny tricks with me."

He then asked the lawyer to present the slip of paper on which he had noted something down from the court master.

"So what it says arbitrator appointed...we have not seen it yet. Going to my stenographer or secretary. This is not done....I do not have a long tenure left now, but I am in charge till my very last day," said the visibly upset CJI.

Even as the Bench left, the matter did not seem to end with the CJI asking his court master "aap andar aaiye zara (come inside please)".
