Chhattisgarh High Court reduces jail term awarded to man convicted for killing aunt on suspicions of witchcraft

The Court modified the man's murder conviction and reduced his sentence after noting that both he and the deceased belonged to an underdeveloped community, most of whose members believed in superstitions.

The fact that superstitious beliefs still prevail in parts of the country was recently factored in by the Chhattisgarh High Court to reduce the prison sentence imposed on a man convicted for killing his aunt over suspicions that his wife fell ill on account of witchcraft by the aunt [Madan Lal Sahu v. State of Chhattisgarh].
