Centre introduces Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill to empower States to identify SEBCs, overcome Supreme Court's Maratha reservation verdict

The amendment has been introduced in the wake of Supreme Court ruling in the Maratha reservation judgment which had by a 3:2 majority, ruled that it is the Central government alone which is empowered to identify SEBCs.

The Central government on Monday introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Seventh Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha to enable States and Union Territories to Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC) and include them in a list to be published under Article 342A (1), specifying SEBCs in relation to each State and Union Territory.
