The Central government has notified the appointment of Advocates Bibhu Datta Guru and Amitendra Kishore Prasad as judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court..A notification to this effect was published on the website of the Ministry of Law & Justice on August 12."In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri (i) Bibhu Datta Guru and (ii) Amitendra Kishore Prasad, to be Additional Judges of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, in that order of seniority, for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices," the notification said..The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of these two advocates as judges on July 30 this year..As per the Collegium resolution, the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues had on February 21 recommended the names of the two advocates.The Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of Chhattisgarh had concurred with the recommendation..Following this, the Collegium at Supreme Court carried out its own exercise including assessment of merit and suitability of the candidates.The sole consultee-judge at the Supreme Court had recused from offering his views, as one of the advocates is related to him..The Chhattisgarh High Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 22 is currently functioning with 15 judges..[Read Notification]
