The Central government on Tuesday notified the appointment of Advocate Neela Gokhale as judge of the Bombay High Court..A notification to this effect was published on the website of Ministry of Law & Justice."In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr. Neela Kedar Gokhale, to be an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court, for a period of two years with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office," the notification stated..The appointment was made after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the same on January 10, 2023..Advocate Neela Gokhale is an aluminus of Indian Law Society (ILS) College, Pune. After completing her LLB in 1992, she went on to complete LLM from the University of Pune and thereafter a Doctorate in Law from the Bundelkhand University, Uttar Pradesh. She practiced in district and family courts and other tribunals of Pune for about 7 years.From 2007, she expanded her practice in Supreme Court of India.Gokhale had been on multiple panels over the years including the Panel-A for Union of India in Supreme Court, and other state and central government institution panels. She had also appeared in matters of civil, criminal and constitutional nature before the Supreme Court, high courts of Delhi and Bombay.She had also filed public interest litigations in her own name and on behalf of others.Since 2018, she assisted Advocate Shrikant Shivde who was the lawyer for Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, an accused in the Malegaon Blast case.After Shivde expired in 2022, she continued representing Purohit.In 2020, Gokhale also appeared for an NGO ‘In pursuit of Justice’ in a PIL seeking to expand the scope of the Contempt of Court Act to restrain media organisations which could be obstructing the administration of justice in “sensitive criminal matters” from the time FIR is registered..As on January 1, 2023, Bombay High Court was functioning at a strength of 65 judges as opposed to its sanctioned strength of 94 judges..[Read Notification]
