The Central government on Tuesday has extended the tenure of Sangeeta Verma as the acting Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI)..Sangeeta Verma was appointed as the acting Chairperson last year in October after Ashok Kumar Gupta had resigned from post. According to an official communication issued by the corporate affairs ministry as reported by PTI, Verma shall act as the acting Chairperson "until the date on which new Chairperson is appointed or till any further orders in this regard"..CCI consists of a Chairperson and 6 Members appointed by the Central Government and comes under Ministry of Corporate Affairs.It is the duty of the Commission to eliminate practices having adverse effect on competition, promote and sustain competition, protect the interests of consumers and ensure freedom of trade in the markets of India.The Commission is also required to give opinion on competition issues on a reference received from a statutory authority established under any law and to undertake competition advocacy, create public awareness and impart training on competition issues.
