A public interest litigation (PIL) petition alleging that the television show Koffee with Karan promotes racism, sexuality and obscenity, was rejected by the Calcutta High Court last week. .A bench of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj while dismissing the plea noted that PIL was filed to garner publicity.“Having, regard to nature of controversy involved in the matter, we find that object of filing the present public interest litigation is to gain publicity...,” the Court said in its order..The PIL was filed by one Nazia Elahi Khan against the talk show hosted and presented by Bollywood film director Karan Johar.The petitioner alleged that the show which is aired on OTT Platform “Disney Hotstar” promotes racism, sexuality and obscenity through words or visible representation.Hence, petitioner prayed for Court to issue directions to police authorities to initiate criminal proceedings against Johar and Disney Hotstar.The Court, however, dismissed the plea. .Karan Johar was represented by a team from DSK Legal comprising Anand Desai (Managing Partner), Chandrima Mitra (Partner), Parag Khandhar (Partner) and Pranita Saboo (Senior Associate).
