The Calcutta High Court today directed issuance of notice in a PIL seeking the framing of a scheme for granting financial assistance to lawyers who may require such assistance on account of the COVID-19 lockdown..The Bench of Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice Arijit Banerjee noted that the petitioners had invoked the provisions of the West Bengal Advocates’ Welfare Fund Act, 1991 and the West Bengal Advocates’ Welfare Corporation Act, 2012..It was observed that the petitioners sought framing of such a scheme in view of the fact that work in the Courts had come to a standstill due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus..While ordering a copy of the writ petition to be served to the Bar Council of West Bengal, the Bench directed the Bar Council to respond to the concerns raised in the petition by the next date of hearing..The matter will be next heard on April 23 at 11:30 am..[Read the order here]
