The Bombay High Court on Wednesday suspended the sentence of gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan in the 2001 murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty..A special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) had sentenced Rajan to life imprisonment in May this year. Pending appeal against the conviction, a Bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and PK Chavan granted him bail on a bond of ₹1 lakh with one or more sureties."Execution of sentences allowed by the special court in the MCOCA case stands suspended pending the appeal," the Court ordered..However, Rajan will continue to remain in prison as he was earlier convicted for the murder of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey and is serving jail sentences in other cases..Shetty was the owner of the 'Golden Crown' hotel in South Mumbai, and allegedly faced extortion threats from Rajan's gang.Due to such threats, Shetty was provided with security cover by the Mumbai Police. However, two months prior to his murder, the security had been withdrawn.Shetty had purportedly failed to pay the extortion amount and was shot dead outside his office on the first floor of the hotel on May 4, 2001.
