The Bombay High Court is hearing a habeas corpus petition moved by Republic TV Editor in Chief Arnab Goswami challenging his arrest by the Maharashtra Police for his alleged role in abetting a suicide.
A Bench of Justices SS Shinde and MS Karnik is hearing the matter.
The Court issued notice in the matter on Thursday. Yesterday, the Bench heard submissions made for Goswami's release, with Senior Advocate Harish Salve leading the arguments. Senior Advocate Aabad Ponda also appeared for Goswami.
The Court proceeded to fix the matter for further hearing today, after obtaining consent from the parties to the case. The Judges opined that they would have to hear other parties as well before any order can be passed in the matter.
Goswami will be seeking for bail and interim stay on proceedings as well in the hearing today.
A plea moved by Adnya Naik is also before the Court. Adnya is the daughter of the person who died by suicide in 2018, in connection with which Goswami was arrested on Wednesday morning.
The suicide case had been closed by the Mumbai Police earlier citing lack of evidence against the accused by virtue of an “A” summary. Earlier this year, the Maharashtra Government had reopened the case investigation, leading to Goswami's arrest on Wednesday.
