The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Friday issued a circular urging all bar associations across the State to implement a minimum stipend for junior lawyers..As per the circular, all advocates and Senior Advocates who employ the services of a junior advocate in major cities like Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore must pay them a stipend of ₹20,000.For all other areas in the State and the Union Territory, the minimum stipend to be paid to junior lawyers is ₹15,000..The Bar Council issued the circular in compliance with an order passed by the Madras High Court last month..In an order passed on June 12, a Bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and C Kumarappan had directed lawyers practicing in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore to pay their juniors a minimum monthly stipend of ₹20,000.Lawyers practicing before any court in other cities across Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry should pay their juniors a minimum monthly stipend of ₹15,000, the Court had said.Such amount has been calculated taking into account the taking into consideration “the cost of living and expenditure costs prevalent as on today,” it had said..In its circular, the Bar Council has also said that as per the Court’s order, in paying such stipend to their juniors, lawyers must not discriminate on the lines of gender.“The Hon'ble High Court also observed that it is the incumbent duty of all the stakeholders in the legal profession to provide an environment where every and thought may differ but the pages of our history have shown that the Lawyer,” the circular reads..[Read Circular]
