Are you saying Indian medicine system is inferior to allopathy? Delhi High Court

The Delhi High court on Tuesday directed the National Council for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) to come up with a detailed response disclosing the number of seats available and lying vacant for courses in Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Sowa-Rigpa..A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla has given the NCISM time till July 22 to come up with a response. .The High Court was dealing with petitions seeking a separate system of examination for admissions into these courses. Advocate Animesh Kumar told the Court that applying National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission into Indian system of medicines meant that if a person did not get 50 percentile in the test, they were not allowed admissions. Kumar said that most of the students who score high marks opt for courses like MBBS and BDS, because of which most of the seats in institutes offering courses in Indian system of education are going vacant. “I have data with respect to Punjab. After second round of counselling, 878 of 1,100 seats are vacant. In Haryana, 50 per cent seats are vacant,” he told the Court. .The Bench, however, countered the submissions asking the petitioner if he thought the Indian system of medicine is inferior to allopathy and should have different standards set for admission. .Counsel for the NCISM submitted that people practising AYUSH courses cannot, on one hand, demand parity in benefits with MBBS doctors, and on the other, choose different standards for admission. He added that doctors in Ayurveda or Unani systems are not inferior to allopathic doctors, and even the Supreme Court has set similar set of standards for doctors in these fields. “Supreme Court is saying you have same set of standards for the Ayurveda doctors as well. When it come to rights, they want to be equated with allopathy doctors but they now want lower standards,” the counsel said..The judges, however, said that even though the objective to have similar standards for allopathic doctors and those practising Indian system appears to be laudable, it cannot be that "in pursuit of those golden eggs, people do get admission and institutes are forced to shut down"..The Court directed the NCISM to come up with details regarding the total number of seats in these courses across the country and number of admissions granted so far.
