The Supreme Court today afforded one last opportunity for lawyers to cure defective applications and to submit complete application forms, for verification of degrees by the Bar Council of India under the BCI (Certificate of Practice) Rules, 2015..The order was passed by a Bench of Justices RK Agrawal and AM Sapre..The time period of 15 days will start to run from the date of publication of advertisement regarding the same in two leading newspapers, one in English and the other in regional language..The Court also directed that State Bar Councils will have to complete the verification process within one month from the expiry of 15 days..Further, the Court also ordered that University Authorities will have to ensure the verification of degrees awarded by them, without any charge, within one month on its presentation..The State Bar Councils will then have to prepare an electoral rolls based on the verification. The State Bar Councils will have to declare the schedule of elections after the expiry of 75 days time period given above. The schedule for elections will have to be prepared within one week..The Court also directed the BCI to request a retired judge of Supreme Court to supervise and control the whole process of verification and preparation of electoral rolls..The matter is now listed for hearing in the second week of January 2018..Read the order below.
