A day after students at the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) students began a protest against the Vice Chancellor (VC), the varsity announced closure of the NLU till further orders.

The students have alleged that the VC Professor JS Singh on Sunday had entered the rooms of girl students at the hostel without consent and prior notice. Singh has also been accused of making inappropriate comments while addressing the female students on various occasions.

With students continuing with the protest and demanding the VC's resignation, a Special Committee was constituted by the RGNUL on Monday to examine their grievances.

However, the step has apparently failed to break the stalemate. In an office order, the university administration said the student representatives failed to turn for a meeting convened by the Committee.

Consequently, an order was issued to close the university till further orders.

"Considering the prevailing circumstances, on the recommendation of the Committee, keeping in view the safety and welfare of the students the University shall remain closed with immediate effect till further orders. The willing students are allowed to proceed to their respective homes," the Office Order said.

The nine-member Committee constituted to address the grievances of students consists of Professor Sharanjit Kaur, Prof. Naresh Kumar Vats, Dr. Geetika Wali, Dr. Ivneet Walia, Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma, Dr. Shruti Goyal, Dr. Tanya Mander, Dr. Jashleen Kewlani, and Dr. Sidharth Dahiya.
