The Bar Council of India has hailed the nomination of former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, as a member of the Parliament (Rajya Sabha). The press release issued today states,
The press release also addresses the criticism received from former Judges and a few lawyers, stating it to be 'unwarranted and premature'. it further states,
While adding that there have been previous instances of nominating a former Chief Justice or judges of the Supreme Court, the press release adds that there is a mark difference between their elections and the 'nomination of Mr Justice Ranjan Gogoi'.
Stating that Gogoi has been nominated by the President himself and has not joined a political party to contest the Rajya Sabha election like the other judges did after their retirement, the Bar Council has appreciated the nomination, while adding that in their opinion it is the fittest from every point of view.
In asking the former judges and lawyers to refrain from criticising the appointment, the Bar Council adds,
"Let's wait and watch. See the performance of Mr Justice Ranjan Gogoi as a Parliamentarian. He has performed as the Chief Justice of India to the full satisfaction of the nation."
The Council has also thanked the President and the Government of India for having such a vision and hopes that this decision will go a long way in the process of nation building.
