Law Minister Kiren Rijiju commends CJI DY Chandrachud for his work as Supreme Court E-committee chairperson

The Union Law Minster Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday commended Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud for his work as the chairperson of the Supreme Court E-committee. .He stated that the CJI's leadership enabled coordination between the government and e-committee and thanked him for his role. "I want to thank CJI DY Chandrachud since under his leadership we were able to do all this in coordination with him," the Law Minister said. He was speaking at a function organised to felicitate award winners of the e-Courts ProjectThe Law Minister also stated that he had requested Justice Chandrachud to continue heading the E-committee even after he became the CJI and he agreed to it. "When he became the CJI, I requested him that even after becoming the CJI, he should continue to head the Supreme Court E-committee. It was my special request since Phase 3 of the committee is at a crucial stage. He has agreed to it," he said.Justice Chandrachud took over the reins of the E-Committee when he was a puisne judge and before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.Usually, when a judge becomes the CJI, he nominates another judge to head the committee.But Justice Chandrachud has continued to head the committee even after his appointment as CJI on request of the Law Minister..At the function today, Digital India Award and National E-Governance Award was awarded to the Department of Justice's e-Courts project and the National Award for Institutions engaged in empowering persons with disabilities was given to the Supreme Court's e-Committee..The Law Minister said that the Supreme Court e-Committee and Department of Justice were working in close coordination with the objective to get work done. .Further, sharing his views on pendency of cases, the Law Minister opined that speedy trial and justice would be possible only if the judiciary and the executive work together."We have 4 crore 90 lakh pending cases in the country. It is in large number and pendency means denial and delay of justice. When we speak of access to justice we have to ensure speedy delivery of justice. Only way to reduce pendency is for the judiciary and executive to work on tandem with each other, e-Courts is an ambitious project and it is in final stage.".The Law Minister also highlighted the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards the e-project."He is proactive in providing assistance and fulfilling demands of the judiciary," Rijiju said..He also took to his Twitter handle and congratulated all award-winners, and also said that the Department of Justice was working with Supreme Court's e-Committee to create paperless courts as per PM Modi's digital India campaign..While addressing the media at the felicitation, Rijiju also said that the Supreme Court Collegium publishing the opinions of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) on candidates recommended by the Collegium for judgeship, is a matter of concern.Read details about that here. .[Read our live-coverage of the event below]
