The 23rd convocation of National Law School of India University, Bangalore was held yesterday with Law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda and CJI HL Dattu the guests of honour..Also in attendance were Supreme Court judges Thakur, Chelameswar, Dave, and Sikri JJ., among others. Judges of the Karnataka High Court including Acting Chief Justice SK Mukherjee were also present, along with Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra..While addressing the graduating students, Gowda highlighted the need to improve the overall standard of legal education in India, particularly at the non-NLUs. He said,.“As law students from other law schools outnumber the products of national law schools, quality of legal professionals in India not up to the mark. There is an urgent need to bring these universities to the level of NLUs.”.Gowda also asked why the majority of NLU graduates prefer to take up corporate jobs as opposed to opting for litigation. He was quoted as saying,.“If you shy away from the battlefield in the courts, who will fight the battle?”.A total of 611 students from different courses were conferred degrees during the convocation. As regards the graduating B.A.LLB batch, Shiva Santosh Kumar bagged 14 gold medals. Mansi Sood, a Rhodes Scholar was awarded six gold medals, while Vansh Sharad Gupta was awarded five.
