[Kunal Kamra contempt case] Lawyer moves Supreme Court against 'Brahmin-Baniya' remark by Kamra

A plea has been filed before the Supreme Court against statements made by stand up comic Kunal Kamra that the apex court is a "Brahmin-Baniya' affair [Shrirang Katneshwarkar v. Kunal Kamra]..The statements were made in his stand-up special on YouTube, Be Like.The plea was filed by advocate Ashutosh Dubey through advocates Bharat Manubarwala, Aditya Manubarwala, and Siddharth Chapalgaonkar as an intervention application in an already pending contempt of court case against Kamra. Kamra is facing contempt of court case in Supreme Court for his tweets criticising the Supreme Court for its order releasing Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami on bail.On November 12, 2021 Attorney General KK Venugopal had granted permission to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Kamra based on complaints from various law students and lawyers who had drawn the attention of the law officer to four tweets by Kamra.According to the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, a private individual can file a contempt of court petition in Supreme Court only after obtaining the consent of the Attorney General or the Solicitor General. Similar consent has to be obtained from the concerned Advocate General of the State when filing a contempt petition before a High Court.Venugopal had said that the fresh remarks objected to may be placed on record and submitted as part of the existing criminal contempt proceedings before the Supreme Court. Dubey's plea said that apart from the existing comments being proceeded against, Kamra must be prosecuted for calling the Supreme Court a 'Brahmin-Baniya affair' and for saying he has more faith in a food court than the apex court. .Kamra has been tangled in several legal matters in recent times, from being put in the no-fly list for heckling an anchor on a plane, to facing criminal contempt multiple times over his social media posts and comments.Notably, in the present contempt of court case, Kamra had stated on affidavit that the top court's majesty is not lowered by comedians like him; instead public's faith in the judiciary is founded on the institution's own actions and not on any criticism or commentary about it.Most of the applicants in the contempt matters are law students or advocates. .Who are the petitioners seeking contempt of court action against Kunal Kamra?
