Karti Chidambaram will remain in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till March 6, a Special CBI court ruled today..After hearing the parties for more than three hours today, Special CBI judge Sunil Rana of the Patiala House Court reserved its order. It was later revealed that Chidambaram will remain in CBI custody till Tuesday, March 6, for further questioning in the INX media case..Chidambaram was brought before the special CBI Judge at around 2 pm. The CBI, represented by ASG Tushar Mehta, moved an application before the court seeking a fourteen-day remand for Chidambaram in order to properly conduct their interrogation..Mehta stated in his submissions that in accordance with the court’s order, Chidambaram was taken for medical examination to Safdarjung Hospital, where the doctor sent him to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), despite showing no signs of uneasiness..He further submitted said that Chidambaram was discharged at around 7:30 am, after which he was brought to the CBI headquarters for interrogation..He proceeded to submit that the questions put to Chidambaram remained unanswered, and contended that he will substantiate all his averments to satisfy the court..“Basic questions asked to him remain unanswered.”.In his submissions, Mehta also stated that there is strong documentary evidence that links Chidambaram’s with the Advantage Strategic Private Limited..Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Karti Chidambaram, countered the claims of the CBI, and submitted that the arrest was made without declaration of grounds, which is per se unconstitutional..He quoted in his submissions that CBI has not issued him summons in the last six months, after which an arrest was suddenly made. Singhvi asked,.“Arrest must be justified so as to the need of arrest. What was the need to arrest him yesterday?”.Opposing the CBI’s accusations of tampering with evidence, Singhvi submitted that they do not have an iota of evidence to prove the same..During the course of the hearing, Singhvi also accused CBI of leaking the statement made by Indrani Mukherjee under 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to the media, and promoting the same on WhatsApp..In response, Mehta submitted that there are records to substantiate that Indrani Mukherjee met Chidambaram. He contended that the questions asked to him are different from those asked before, and remain unanswered. He said,.“It is wrong for them to place reliance on Arnesh Kr. judgment at this stage. Please appreciate that we are already on the stage of investigation.”.He also submitted that the CBI made the arrest after exhausting less drastic measures, which is completely justified..Yesterday, the court directed that Chidambaram be sent to one-day police custody, following his arrest last morning by the CBI.
