Justice Verma Committee makes series of wide-ranging recommendations [Download Report]
The Justice Verma Committee, whose members include former Solicitor General, Gopal Subramanium, and Justice (Retd) Leila Seth, released its report on amendments to criminal law today.
The Committee was constitued on December 23, 2012 after the rape of a twenty-three year old student in Delhi, is headed by former Supreme Court judge, Justice JS Verma. After calling for suggestions from the public, the Commitee receieved over 70,000 suggestions from stake-holders, social activists and the general public.
The Committee also interacted with special interest groups and political parties in the process of forumalting its recommendations. The report (a copy of which is available below) makes a host of wide-ranging recommendations, from amendments to the Representation of People Act, 1951 to inserting new offences under the Indian Penal Code, 1860.
