Justice TS Sivagnanam, the senior-most judge of the Calcutta High Court, was sworn in as its 33rd Chief Justice since independence on Thursday..West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose administered the oath to Justice Sivagananam in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, ministers of the State and opposition leaders.The event was also attended by former judges of the High Court including Justice Indira Banerjee..After being welcomed by brief speeches by the Advocate General, the Additional Solicitor General and the President of the High Court Bar Association, CJ Sivagnanam said,"I always welcome suggestions with open mind, there is no problem that cannot be solved."The newly sworn-in Chief Justice urged the members of the Bar to cooperate with him during his tenure, which would be for more than two years..Justice Sivagnanam has been serving as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court since March 31 this year.The Supreme Court Collegium had in February this year recommended his name for the appointment as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.Born on September 16, 1963, Justice Sivagnanam started his practice in September 1986. He was initially appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court on March 31, 2009 and was made permanent on March 29, 2011. He was then transferred to the Calcutta High Court in October 2021. He is set to retire on September 15, 2025.
