Justice GS Sistani of the Delhi High Court today recused himself from hearing the suo moto petition in the Sushant Rohilla suicide case..The case arises out of the suicide committed by a third year law student at Amity Law School, Sushant Rohilla. Rohilla was not allowed to appear in his end-semester examination due to low attendance, which allegedly forced him to resort to take this drastic step..The Supreme Court had taken suo moto cognizance of the matter after a letter was written by Rohilla’s friend alleging harassment by Amity Law School and two of its senior-most professors. The matter was then transferred by the Supreme Court to the Delhi High Court earlier this month..When the matter first came up before the Delhi High Court, Justice Sistani had stated that his children had graduated from Amity Law School. He had, therefore, asked the parties to state at the next hearing if they had any objections to him hearing the case..In the hearing today, Rohilla’s sister Mehak Rohilla, through her counsel requested Justice Sistani to recuse from the case; the judge obliged to the request..The matter will now be heard on April 19 by a different Bench.
