Justice Leila Seth, first woman judge of Delhi High Court, dies at 86

Justice Leila Seth passed away today at the age of 86, reports PTI. She died in her house in Noida, reports said.

Born in Lucknow in October 1930, Justice Leila Seth joined the Bar in 1959.

She was the first woman to top the London Bar exams in 1958, the first woman appointed as judge of the Delhi High Court, and the first woman to become a High Court chief justice.

She initially practiced at the Calcutta High Court and then Patna High Court before moving to Delhi.

Justice Leila Seth was also a part of the three-member Committee headed by Justice J.S. Verma, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, constituted to suggest amendments to criminal law to sternly deal with sexual assault cases following the Nirbhaya case.

Justice Leila Seth, it is learnt, has donated her body to medical science.
