Justice Gautam Patel to deliver Annual Vidhi Lecture on Institutional Autonomy in Democratic Governance

Justice Gautam Patel of the Bombay High Court will be speaking at Vidhi Annual Lecture today evening at the India International Centre, on the theme “Between Scylla and Charybdis: Institutional Autonomy in Democratic Governance“.

Justice Patel will dwell on how the functional — and functioning — autonomy of institutions and statutory bodies is essential to the survival of a liberal civil society and is fundamental to the concept of a democratic republic. Ranging from film certification to environmental protection, autonomy has to be understood as structural insulation from variable political realities. Understood in this way autonomy does not weaken governments but in fact, strengthens them.

The Vidhi Annual Lecture is an annual event where a public intellectual speaks on a significant legal and policy issue of contemporary relevance.

Past editions have featured lectures on the Uniform Civil Code by Justice Ruma Pal, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India and on Judicial Transparency by Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India.
