Justice BV Nagarathna made Chairperson of Supreme Court Gender Sensitisation & Internal Complaints Committee

The Committee, formed in 2013, was constituted to further the cause of gender sensitisation and address complaints made with regard to sexual harassment within the Supreme Court precincts.

Justices BV Nagarathna has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the reconstituted Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee of the Supreme Court.

An office order to this effect was issued on Wednesday.

Justice Nagarathna will take the place of Justice Hima Kohli, who retired recently.

Among the other new members are Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Senior Advocate and Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj, and Advocate Sakshi Banga.

Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy and Advocate Nina Gupta retain their positions as members who are representatives from the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

Guruswamy was earlier part of the committee under the category of outside members nominated by the Chief Justice of India for their non-governmental association with the causes of gender and social justice, and women empowerment.

That position in the new committee is taken by Swaraj.

The other retained members of the Committee are:

  • Dr. Sukhda Pritam, Additional Registrar

  • Advocate Soumyajit Pani (representative of SCBA)

  • Advocate Anindita Pujari (representative of the Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record Association)

  • Madhu Chauhan (representative of the Supreme Court Bar Clerks’ Association)

  • Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta (senior member of SCBA)

  • Leni Chaudhuri (Executive Director, University of Chicago Centre in India Pvt Ltd)
