I cannot describe this as a dream come true because I never knew I would be in law and continue practicing, but it has led me here," he saidJustice Bopanna echoed cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's words after achieving 100 centuries, noting that every new score starts from zero."It was similar for me. I am thankful to everyone at the bar and on the bench."The CJI in his address likened Justice Bopanna to former India cricketer Rahul Dravid saying he was the 'Mr. Dependable' of the Supreme Court."He continues to have a keen interest in cricket and symbolises a captain cool when he presides over court. I do not know who is his favourite player. However, he is akin to Rahul Dravid as our own Mr Dependable in the Supreme Court. His soft spoken demeanour makes all feel heard and valued. In his court, several young lawyers got a chance to argue and hone their skills for which they are grateful," he stated.CJI also stated that Justice Bopanna would not be taking up any post retirement assignments. .Justice Bopanna was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. He enrolled with the Bar Council of Karnataka in 1984 and practised in the Karnataka High Court and civil and labour corts for 22 years. He was appointed as an additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on January 6, 2006 and became a permanent judge on March 1, 2007.He was appointed as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on October 29, 2018.He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme court of India on May 24, 2019."I am satisfied that I have filled my bag of experience, though I do not know about my bag of luck," said Justice Bopanna on his last day as a judge. While reminiscing his earlier days, Justice Bopanna said,"My family and so many people have helped me on the way. When I was elevated as a judge in 2006, in my reply to the CJ address I had said I am aware of contrasting roles of lawyer and judge.".CJI Chandrachud in his address recounted his days with Justice Bopanna. Normally when Justice Bopanna would circulate a judgment, I would say respectfully agree with a smile and warm regards, the CJI said."But today I have to add reasons of my own in support of the proposition, if this was a debate, that Justice Bopanna you are a great judge, human being and worthy friend. All our interactions have been so wholesome. I congratulate the new office bearers and hope they will fulfill their duties with responsibility and non-partisanship with loyalty to the Constitution. What better way to re affirm this than in tribute to Justice Bopanna, who has been a judge of the people," the CJI said..About Justice Bopanna's punctuality, CJI stated,"He is know for punctuality and diligence. He was known in the Karnataka HC to seldom take leave. He had to take a short break here but always had his heart back in his chamber here and coordinated with staff and clerks. He is punctual to the T and quickly resumed. Many have said they have to reset their clocks to match his punctuality...He has never been averse to new ideas and technologies. He allowed family court proceedings through Skype."
