A month after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) began functioning, the Government on October 19 set up the Competition Appellate Tribunal (CAT) to hear appeals on the CCI’s orders..Established in 2003, the CCI has until now been performing an advisory role and has been spreading awareness about competition law in India. With the establishment of the CAT, matters pending before the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission will be transferred to the Tribunal. Disputes relating to disparaging advertising, however, will be transferred to the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission..The CAT will be headed by former judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Arijit Pasayat [pictured]. Former Department of Personnel and Training Secretary Rahul Sarin and Deputy CAG Pravin Tripathi will assist Justice Pasayat on the Tribunal.
