The Supreme Court is seized of another significant case relating to lawmakers..The petition, which has been filed by NGO Lok Prahari, seeks setting up of an independent commission to decide salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament..The petition which was filed in 2004 in Delhi High Court was dismissed in 2016 leading to the appeal in the Supreme Court..The Central government had taken a stand in their counter affidavit that the matter is under consideration by the government..When the matter came up today before a Bench of Justices Jasti Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Senior Advocate Ajit Kumar Sinha, appearing for the Centre sought time to take a final stand..“Doesn’t the counter affidavit disclose what the government stand is”, asked Justice Kaul..“We have said that it is under consideration in our counter affidavit. I don’t dispute it. But I request a week’s indulgence to take a final stand”, said Sinha..The Court initially mulled allowing the petitioner to make his submissions but then acceded to the request by AK Sinha to adjourn the case..The matter will now be taken up in March 6.
