The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain a plea seeking to reduce the pass marks for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) [Ranjeet Singh and Another v. Bar Council of India]. .While dismissing the plea, a three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra said that lowering the existing cutoff marks further would impact the quality of persons qualifying to practice law. "How much more can the cutoffs be lowered? Padho bhai (Study brother)," a bemused CJI Chandrachud remarked..The AIBE, which is conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI), has to be cleared by law graduates in order to practice law in Indian courts. The current cutoff for general and OBC category candidates is 45 out of 100, while for SC/ST candidates it is 40. .According to a recent response received under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act), only 48.36% of the candidates had passed the 18th edition of the All India Bar Examination (AIBE-18) held on December 10, 2023.The BCI had revealed that a total of 1,48,781 candidates had registered for the exam, out of whom 1,44,014 appeared.Out of the people who appeared, 69,646 (48.36%) passed and 74,368 (51.64%) failed..74,368 candidates failed All India Bar Examination: RTI reply
