The Central Government has notified the appointment of new Chief Justices to the High Courts of Madras, Jharkhand, and Orissa.
Justice VK Tahilramani, Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court has been appointed to take over as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in place of Justice Indira Banerjee, who has been elevated to the Supreme Court.
The notification issued to this effect states,
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shrimati Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani, Judge of the Bombay High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office.”
Justice Tahilramani joined the bar in 1982 and has served as a Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the State of Maharashtra. She was elevated to the Bench in the year 2001. She has served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court twice.
Justice Aniruddha Bose of the Calcutta High Court has been appointed the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. As stated in the notification issued by the Government,
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Aniruddha Bose, Judge of the Calcutta High Court to be the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge his office.”
Justice Aniruddha Bose has been serving as a judge of the Calcutta High Court since 2004 and was the senior-most puisne judge of the Court prior to his transfer.
Whereas his name was initially recommended for the post of Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, the Centre had returned the proposal on the ground that he did not have adequate experience to take over such a prominent High Court. The current appointment has been made pursuant to a recommendation made by the Collegium last month.
Justice KS Jhaveri of the Rajasthan High Court has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, in place of Justice Vineet Saran who has been elevated to the Supreme Court. The notification states,
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Kalpesh Satyendra Jhaveri, Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
Enrolled at the Bar in 1983, Jhaveri J. was made an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court in 2004 and became a permanent judge in 2005. He was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in August 2016. His appointment as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court has been made pursuant to a recommendation made by the Collegium last month.
