Former Supreme Court Judge and former Acting Governor of Karnataka, Justice Dr. Shanmughasundaram Mohan passed away yesterday evening. He was 90 years old.

Justice Mohan enrolled as an Advocate in the High Court of Madras in August, 1954. He was appointed Advocate General of Madras in the year of 1971. He was later appointed as an additional Judge of Madras High Court in February, 1974

He was made a permanent Judge of the same High Court on September 1, 1975. Subsequently he was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court for a few months in the year 1988.

Later Justice Mohan was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in1989. Later, in the same year, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka.

He was also appointed as the Acting Governor of Karnataka for a brief period in 1990. Justice Mohan was elevated to the bench of the Supreme Court of India in 1991 and retired in 1995.

During his tenure as a Judge, Justice Mohan mainly dealt with Constitutional Matters, particularly the enforcement of Fundamental Rights.

Justice Mohan also served as the Chairman of the National Cyber Safety and Security Standards. He was also known to have authored various books and contributed immensely to English and Tamil literature. One of most popular books was "Justice Triumphs".
