Former Supreme Court Judge, Justice MK Mukherjee passes away

Among other roles, Justice Mukherjee is also known for having headed a commission to probe the disappearance of Subhash Chandra Bose.

Former Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice MK Mukherjee passed away on Saturday at Calcutta, reports the Telegraph. He was 87 years old.

Justice Manoj Kumar Mukherjee was born in 1933. He enrolled as an advocate in 1962 and joined the Asansol Bar in November, 1956. He practiced before the Sub-Divisional and District Court and Labour Tribunal till 1971. His areas of practice included criminal law and Industrial Labour matters.

He was appointed an additional judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 17, 1977. He was made a permanent judge of the High Court on December 8, 1977.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court on December 14, 1993 and retired on November 11,1998.

In 1999, after his retirement from the Supreme Court, Justice Mukherjee was tasked by the Indian government to probe the disappearance of freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.

The Commission concluded that Bose did not die in a plane crash and that the ashes in Renkoji temple, Japan are not those of Bose. The Mukherjee Commission’s 2005 report was rejected by the Indian Government.
