Former Bombay High Court Judge, Justice Bhimrao N. Naik passed away on Monday. He was 79.

Born on January 23, 1940, Justice Naik graduated in Law from Pune University in April 1964. He was enrolled to the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in October 1964 and started practicing in the District and Sessions Court, Solapur.

He was also a Professor in Dayanand Law College, Solapur for a brief period of five years from 1964 to 1969. Justice Naik, in November of 1969, shifted to Bombay High Court and started practicing on the Appellate Side in both Criminal and Civil matters. He was a Professor in K. C. Law College, Mumbai for seven years from 1969 to 1976. He practiced before the High Court for about 28 years. Initially, he had a large practice on the criminal side and later he developed a large practice on the Civil Side as well. He was the most sought after Counsel on the Appellate Side especially in Rent Act, Co-operative Societies and also Constitutional matters.

He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in January 1989. He was also a Special Counsel for Government of Maharashtra and also a Standing Counsel for Municipal Corporation of Solapur, Barshi, and Miraj. He was elected as a Member of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa and was also unanimously elected as Chairman of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa 1986.

He was later elevated to the Bench of the Bombay High Court on November 9, 1992. During his tenure as Judge of Bombay High Court, he delivered some landmark judgments. For personal reasons, he resigned as a Judge of Bombay High Court on June 7, 1994.

After resigning, Justice Naik started practicing in the Supreme Court of India and practiced there for 16 years before his return to Mumbai in 2010, where he started to exclusively work as an Arbitrator.

Justice Naik is survived by his wife Smt. Uma Naik, two sons, and their families. The elder son, Vineet Naik, is a Senior Advocate of Bombay High Court and younger son, Ameet Naik, is Founder and Managing Partner of Law Firm Naik Naik &aCo.
