Former Delhi HC Chief Justice Rajinder Sachar passes away

Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajinder Sachar passed away at a private hospital in Delhi today. He was 94.

Justice Sachar served as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court between August 1985 to December 1985.

He was the Chairman of an eponymous committee, which submitted a report on the social and economic condition of Muslims in India in 2006. The Sachar  committee was appointed by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Justice Sachar, who joined the Bar in 1952, was appointed an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 1970. He was a well know civil liberties activist, and also served as a member of the United Nations (UN) Sub-Commission for the promotion and protection of human rights.

The office of the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court confirmed his death, and added that the funeral would be at 5:50 p.m. this evening.
