Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana has been appointed member of the International Mediation Panel of the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC)..SIMC chairperson George Lim presented retired Justice Ramana with the letter of appointment on Tuesday in Singapore. Justice Ramana is in Singapore to take part in the “Singapore Convention Week”, the annual convention organised by Singapore’s Ministry of Law, UNICITRAL and over 20 partner organisations..Justice Ramana during his tenure as a judge had been a votary of alternative dispute resolution methods. In July 2021, he had said that mediation is deeply embedded in Indian ethos and was prevalent in India much before the arrival of British. Further, prescribing mediation as a mandatory first step for resolution of disputes will go a long way in reducing pendency of cases before courts in the country, he had opined.In April last year, he evoked the Mahabharata to state that if Lord Krishna had succeeded in mediation to prevent the Kurukshetra war, many lives could have been saved.
