Former Tamil Nadu Advocate General, R Muthukumaraswamy passes away

Senior Advocate and former Advocate General for Tamil Nadu, R Muthukumaraswamy passed away this morning.

He had served as Advocate General for the state of Tamil Nadu between 2016 and 2017, prior to the appointment of incumbent AG Vijay Narayan.

Muthukumaraswamy completed his law from Madras Law College and enrolled as an advocate in 1973. Thereafter, he was attached to the office of Senior Advocate and former Tamil Nadu Advocate General R Krishnamoorthy.

He has served as government pleader for the Tamil Nadu government from 1994 to 1996. He was also the senior standing counsel for the Central government between 1998-1999.

In 2001, he became a designated senior counsel for the Madras High Court and thereafter went on to serve as additional advocate general till 2006. He served as President of the Madras Bar Association for two years, from 2012-2014.

He took over the reins as Advocate General for the state on August 26, 2016, following the resignation of AL Somayaji from the post. Last year, he resigned from the office of Advocate General citing ill health.
