Five new judges take oath at Bombay High Court

Five new judges were sworn in as additional judges of  Bombay High Court on Friday.

Chief Justice DK Upadhyay administered the oath to the following five judges:

• Nivedita Prakash Mehta;

• Prafulla Surendrakumar Khubalkar;

• Ashwin Damodar Bhobe;

• Rohit Wasudeo Joshi; and

• Advait Mahendra Sethna.

The judges will serve for a period of two years from today following which they may or may not be made permanent judges of the High Court.

Until yesterday, the High Court had a functioning strength of 64 judges against a sanctioned strength of 94. With the new appointments, the strength has come up to 69.

The Central government had cleared their appointments on October 23 this year. 

The appointments were made pursuant to the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 24.

As per the Collegium resolution, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court had made the recommendation for the elevation of these five lawyers on January 19, 2024.
